In 1940 it was relised that Britian had no answer to the German fast launches powered by high speed diesel engines. A coastal forces craft was designed to use ligh weight steam turbine, the steam gun boats. Only 9 out of 60 ships were constructed. When they came up against Schnellboats and patrol craft it was quickly realised that they were very vulnerable to light weapons fire, so armour plate was added which reduced ther speed to less that 30 knots, defeating the purpose of the design which was to compete with the Schnellboats.  However they were the most heavily armed small craft to serve in WW.11, fairly bristling with light weapons.
