SEMI-KIT OF THE H.M.S. ROYAL OAK 1/100

HISTORY OF THE SHIP    H.M.S Royal Oak

H.M.S Royal Oak was one of five Royal Sovereign Class battleships constructed for the Royal Navy between 1913 and 1917, the other four being Royal Sovereign, Resolution, Ramilies and Revenge. Two units of the class- Renown and Repulse- had been completed as battlecruisers and one, Resistance, had been cancelled. Royal Oak was laid down at Devonport Dockyard on January 15th 1914 and launched later that year on November 17th and commissioned in May 1916. Royal Oak was completed with a displacement of 25, 750 tons and measured 580 feet in length with a beam of 88.5 feet and a draught of 27 feet. Just under one thousand officers and men were needed to operate this mighty vessel. Royal Oak served in the Great War (1914-1918), fighting at the battle of Jutland, and was refitted between 1922 and 1924.

Displacement: 33,500 tons, weight increased after refit to 34,420 tons. Speed: 19  to 21.5 knots   Range: 4,000 nautical miles.  Compliment 1,040 to 1146.  Armament: Eight 15 - inch Guns, twelve 6 - inch Guns, Eight 4 - inch AA Guns in pairs  Sixteen 2 pounder in pairs. this was increased to 24.  Four 21 inch Torpedo Tubes which were removed during modernization between the wars.

The five Royal Sovereign class battleships were laid down just before the outbreak of World War I. As 15-inch gunned successors to the Iron Duke class they were a reversion to the standard type of Dreadnought battleship rather than an improved Queen Elizabeth type. With little more than half the designed horsepower of the Queen Elizabeths they would only have made 21 knots, and could therefore never have formed a special 'fast division'.

The Royal Sovereigns introduced anew feature to British battleship design, the anti-torpedo bulge; in other words, an external water- or air-filled compartment capable of exploding a torpedo prematurely to minimise damage to the main hull. The Ramill;es was completed with the early type of shallow bulge, later replaced by a very deep type which reached almost to the upper deck battery.

This type of deep bulge was also fitted to the Royal Oak during her 1927 refit, but the other three were given the shallower type. Bulges had the effect of improving the behaviour of the class at sea, as they had been inclined to roll excessively.

SEMI-KITS

This  Semi~kit is a method of supplying the modeller with the requisite parts to construct a large or unusual project without the expense of developing a full kit with is associated costs. Models in the range are chosen for their large size, difficulty or unusual design  for the modeller who wishes to construct a large or difficult model or something a little out of the ordinary that makes the prototype unlikely to be developed in to a full kit.The semi-kit does not contain any instructions or  parts for the decks and superstructure as this is left to the modeller who by the nature of the project will be well versed in locating plans and developing the project to its basic construction.

Semi- kits vary between each subject but normally contain

Detailed glass fibre hulls,   A list if fittings from our production range that are suitable to be used on the model.

Special fittings for complicated parts or noticeable features specific to the ship.

Sets of vacforming for items such as ships boat, funnels, turrets ect

List of plans used to construct the prototype hull.

List of suggested props, shafts and running gear.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF  MOULDEANS  SEMI-KITS.
What is a Semi-Kit
.?

We have developed the semi-kit range to cater for the more experienced modeller who wishes to construct the larger and more complicated types of ship, or for the ship modeller who wishes to speed up construction by taking out the laborious jobs such as hull construction and multiple fitting construction.  The semi-kits complement our range of full kits.
Since the modeller will most probably have some experience, they will be capable of researching and constructing the ship without the use of lengthy instructions provided with the full kits. This means that a large model is within an acceptable price range, or the more exotic and strange prototypes that would not be developed into a full kit. All the fittings from our range can be purchased as separate items or grouped into sets to complete a model.
A new item to our world of model ship kits may be introduced  when a model has been constructed on one of our hulls, and the ship is made available to us. We produce a set of pictures to aid construction, plus a set of assembly notes on the model shown, giving such detail as motors, power, and any other relevant information that may be of assistance to the modeller.

All the Semi-Kits in the DEANS range of warships and merchant ships are to the common scale of 1/96, so you have made the first step towards your own fleet. We have solved most of the problems of ship stability that has frustrated modellers ever since slim fast warships first graced the seas, and set the pulses racing in  children of all ages.
These skills have been carried over to all the other craft in our kit range and have  been incorporated in the 1/24 scale fast craft and the 1/48 & 1/35 scale harbour  range  Before you start to build your model you should work out the construction,  access, and strengthening, do not set off in a rush, take your time. You will know  when your model is finished because one day you will realise that you cannot think  of anything else to do to it. Before that day of course, you will have commissioned  your ship and had various trials to ensure she is ready to join her sisters in the scale fleet you will meet on the water

Due to the large range of hulls in our production we do not carry stock of every item. Normal delivery for items in stock is 10 days, but please allow 14 -28 days for no stock hulls. Estimates of delivery time can be given on placing an order if requested.
We list the known suppliers of plans that may fit the hulls in our range. These items we do not hold in stock as they can be purchased direct by the modeller saving time and cost. Should you wish us to supply plans from outside our range we will be happy to oblige but cannot give exact prices or delivery dates as these are outside our control.

FITTINGS
Standard fittings that can be used to assist construction of many models in the Mouldeans range are available from our range of 1/96 scale warship fittings cast in light alloy and cast plastic.
Special fittings are produced for this model only, and are of the more complicated items, such as the  Blind fire directors, gunnery directors and for the larger models complete moulded gun turrets.
There is a listing of fittings available along with running gear sets, vacform sets etc.
These are far to numerous to include on this web site
Please contact our office for a copy of the required listings.
